Family of Three Evening Session | Northern VA Photographer

There is nothing I love more than a happy kiddo, and this little guy delivered. We met on the most beautiful fall evening for their family session and it was a dream from beginning to end. Here are some of my favorite images from our session together - enjoy!

Rediscovery | Fairfax County Newborn Baby Photographer

I was cleaning up the other day (picking up all the legos that had migrated to my son's room) and came across one of our family photo albums. I hadn't look at it in awhile so I took a few minutes to sit with it and look the pages. Some of the photos are my very favorites and I clearly remember. While others seemed almost brand new to me since I hadn't looked at them in awhile.

And I just sat there looking at them. And me being me, I got teary eyed thinking back and remembering. I am always proud of my son, my family, the life that my husband and I have built. But somehow seeing it laid out in front of me, I just felt it that much more.

I made my husband look at a few of them too (and he laughed at me for being so sentimental), and then back on the shelf the album went. Waiting to be re-discovered another day by someone else.

If I'm lucky, maybe it will be me again.

Frequently Asked Questions About Family Sessions

Annual family portraits are so important. It’s a way to document your growing family and children year over year, creating a treasure trove of portraits to look back on. But I know that in the moment clients often wonder about what to expect and how to move forward. Here are some of the most frequently asked questions about family sessions:

Where will my session be held?

I hold all family sessions outdoors at one of my favorite locations in Leesburg, VA. Each location has been specially handpicked by me personally, selected because they offer beautiful light, scenery, and is a location with few distractions or other visitors.

What should we wear?

When booking a session I send a complete package of what to wear information, along with personal wardrobe consultation. I recommend moms wear dresses (they’re the most flattering) and that the entire family wear outfits in a similar color palette.

What if my kids aren’t well behaved?

It’s a universal truth that kids are unpredictable (and they’re more unpredictable than usual when photos are involved). I’ve seen it all when it comes to kids, and my best piece of advice is that no matter how your kids are behaving, parents should be upbeat, positive, and have fun. Your mood is contagious, and if you have fun your kids will too. Scolding and threats never go over well (I’m a fan of bribery instead - everyone gets ice cream after!) so make the most of your time together, even if it means letting things fall apart (because that can be great fun too).

What’s the best time of year to have a family session?

I hold family sessions in the Spring and Fall months, when the weather is not too warm and not too cold. Virginia weather in the summer is just too hot to be comfortable (and no one wants to look sweaty in images) and too cold in the winter to have much fun either. Spring and fall offer the best color, light, and temperatures for beautiful photos.

What should I do with my photos?

Albums and wall art are the most popular options for family portraits. Everyone loves having a family portrait to display in their home to see everyday, and albums tell your family’s story from beginning to end, highlighting each unique relationship and personality. I recommend creating a combination of the two, so you can enjoy your portrait investment every day for years.

Baby Boy Hayes Makes Family of Four | Loudoun County Newborn Photographer

When I get to know families something special happens: all the worry and concern about the time we have together fades away. All the unknowns become known and we focus on enjoying the time together. Because perfect images don’t come from perfect sessions or perfect weather or perfect behavior. They come from moments. Simple pure moments of togetherness. Wherever we may be or wherever we may go, these are the moments that stay with us.

I’ve worked with so many people beautiful families over the years, and this beautiful family has been with me almost since the very beginning. I’ve seen their family blossom with these two amazing children, the perfect combination of their parents.

They’ve since set off on a wonderful adventure on the west coast. I’m going to miss seeing them so, but I hope it’s the biggest adventure - full of memories and excitement - for all of them.

Here are some of my favorite images from baby boy Hayes newborn session - enjoy!

Why Printed Artwork Is So Important | Northern VA Newborn and Maternity Photographer

Anyone who has ever worked with me knows the value that I place on printed artwork. I want every client who works with me to walk away with something tangible from their session - something they can hold and touch and feel. Something they can hold in their hands.

I know sometimes when the images and experience are fresh and brand new, it’s hard to understand why this is. Photography is a unique art form in that it often can’t be fully appreciated until years after the image is captured and the moment has passed.

Because years down the line is when our memories fade, our children have grown, our faces have more wrinkles. It’s not until years from now that you’ll be able to look back on an album or framed print and think

“wow, my baby was so small”
”I can’t believe how young mom and dad were when I was born”
”I barely remember that happening, but I’m so glad I can look back on it now”

It takes the distance of those years to realize how much things change and how quickly it goes by. It’s only by having something you can hold that those reminders come to us. When we look up on the wall and see the portrait that’s been hanging for years, or when we pull out the album that’s been on the shelf for what feels like a lifetime. Because when we flip through those images and pages, we get to look back into the past and what life was like for us. And our children get to see what life was like for us and them too.
