Arlington VA Family Photographer | Wonderful Family of Five

I was so excited to get to work with this gorgeous family again. I first met them for baby Emerson's newborn session last year and even then I was blown away by how wonderful these three siblings are. Big brothers Wil and Jack are so much fun. Even though I'm told he's the wild one at home, during their family session together Wil was a little more reserved and serious. I loved seeing this serious side of him, he was so thoughtful and focused on taking in everything around us. And the cows! He loves those cows! Biggest brother Jack was hilarious and funny with an easy smile. But most of all, these boys together... well, they're the best. When I asked them what the best thing about having a brother was, the answer was "the hugs." I die. Makes me want to have another little boy of my own. And of course with all the brotherly action going on little sister Emmy did her best to get in on everything. She's not quite walking yet, but when she does I think mom and dad are going to have quite the fun trio at home. She was already wrestling her brothers (and winning!).

Here are some of my favorite images from our time together, enjoy!

Beautiful Baby Girl Makes Family of Four | Fairfax VA Newborn Photographer

Gorgeous baby girl Kennedy was such a dream during her newborn session. I met the rest of her family during her mom's maternity session and I loved getting to see them all again. Especially big brother Caden. I have been incorporating more and more lifestyle imagery in my newborn sessions and I'm so completely in love with it. Capturing itty bitty babies in their homes is so special. There is nothing like capturing a new family together.

Northern VA Outdoor Maternity Session | Manassas VA Pregnancy Photographer

Oh my goodness I had such a good time at this session. Mom Cameron is a hobby photographer with a lot of photographer friends, and I always take it to heart when fellow photography enthusiasts choose to work with me. I loved chatting with her about camera gear and kids and being a mom. The whole family got together for her maternity session and they were a complete joy to work with. Nora may be one of my favorite three olds ever. She is so smart and charming and enthusiastic about becoming a big sister. Much like her, I can't wait to meet the new baby girl!

UPDATE: Baby Claire is here! See her hospital First 48 Session.

4 Things I No Longer Believe About Photography | Northern VA Fine Art Portrait Photographer

When I first got serious about learning the art of photography I dove into the deepend head first. I joined every class I could, read every book I could get my hands on, and asked a ton of questions. I actually still do those things, I don't think the learning ever ends (although I like to think I ask better questions now), but as much I tried to go into all those classes with an open mind, I made a few assumptions about photography that I've realized aren't really true. Here are four things that I no longer believe about photography:

1. There's one perfect way to capture an image.

There's not. There's just not. There are a hundred different ways to capture a beautiful image of the same subject. Maybe it's using different settings, choosing a different lens, or shooting from a different perspective. I've seen this most clearly with the group shoots that I've organized for local photographers. Even though we are all photographing the same thing, our images look completely different. There are no shortage of options a photographer has her disposable to create an image. If you put 12 photographers in the same place at the same time, each of them will create something different and unique.

2. If I'm good enough, everyone will love me.

Instead, almost the opposite is true. The better I get, the more developed my style becomes. And my style isn't for everyone. I have seen amazing photographers get trolled for their work (which is something I will never understand, that's so uncool), and ultimately it's because their eye isn't the same as someone else's. Their visions don't mesh; there is no meeting of the minds. And that's okay. Not everyone will love everything I do either. The important thing is that I love what I do, and my clients do too.

3. Gear is everything. No, it's not. Yes, it is.

New photographers are constantly told that great images aren't made with cameras, they're made by photographers. And this is absolutely, a million times over, true. The photographer captures the image, not the camera. But, solid gear does make a difference. It helps bring our vision to reality. Putting amazing gear in the hands of someone who doesn't know how to use it will be fruitless (not to mention expensive), but it's disingenuous to say that gear doesn't matter. Even the best painters choose amazing brushes and paints over crayons (although who doesn't love a giant new box of 64 Crayolas, am I right?). The important thing is to know your gear, know what it can and can't do, and make sure it meshes with how you produce your art. All that gear, it's tools to produce your vision, not the vision itself.

4. It's an easy art form.

Growing up I never considered myself particularly artistic. I can't draw (stick figures are my jam), I'm awkward with a paintbrush, and I can't even sing or play a musical instrument well (despite 4 years of clarinet lessons). When I discovered photography I thought I had discovered a special kind of art - an art with rules that I could learn. With techniques and methods and science and specific ways of creating an image. And that's true, those things are there, but it's far from easy. I will spend the rest of my life learning and mastering the art of photography. It's a journey, so it will never end. Ultimately though you have to go beyond the rules, even break the rules, to find your style and create your vision. The truth is, I haven't found a super secret easy way of creating art, I just found the best medium of creating art for me.

Adorable Baby Kingston | Fairfax VA Newborn Family Photographer

After doing his mom's maternity session I was so thrilled to meet adorable baby Kingston! I met this handsome new family member at his home in northern VA. Baby boy Kingston has a wildly adorable big brother named Leo and they are just too sweet together. I have to say, Leo is one of my most favorite little guys that I have ever photographed. He was a blast at his mom's maternity session and that definitely carried over to his little brother's newborn session too. I seriously love toddlers, they are so much fun.

I have recently started incorporating more lifestyle images in my newborn work and I am so happy to be doing it. My newborn sessions include a mix of naturally posed newborn images, and lifestyle images capturing the new family together in their home. I love capturing families how they are everyday in their own homes. It also gives me an opportunity to incorporate treasured items in a session. I love the colorful blanket we included here. It's not only gorgeous, but it's meaningful as well, and I love capturing that for my families.

Here are some of my favorite images from baby Kingson's newborn session, enjoy!
