Filter Out the Noise

To my dear photographer friends:

I received a note from another photographer recently. A lovely one filled with kind words about my work.
I was flattered beyond measure.

But intertwined with the compliments, was an undercurrent of uncertainty.

What should I do?
How do I manage?
I don't want to miss out.
How do
you do it?
Help?

The answer is: I don't know.

I can't give you an exact formula, no one can.
That's why you see so many posts and messages and comments on the same thing.
How? Why?

Because it's about you. And that's the very best part.
Because it's about your limits & desires.
Your focus.

You control your schedule. What you shoot. When.
Which clients you work with. How often. What kind.

Your business. Your art. Your rules.

So if you're here. Serving your clients. Serving your community.
You might as well enjoy it.

You might as well shoot what you love. Because then you'll shoot the best.
You might as well set your schedule. Because then you'll shoot the best.
You might as well set aside time for your family. Because then you'll shoot the best.

Being overworked, stressed, lonely. That doesn't lead to good work.

And with good work. And peace. And finding yourself.
The work will come.

Because your images will sing. They will cheer. They will breathe.
They will mirror you, and how you love what you do most.
Refreshing and honest and pure.

So be gentle with yourself. Allow your faults and your times of imbalance.

Then move along and breathe and recoup.
Because then you'll find your why and your way.

4 Things I Would Love for You to Know About My Photography Business for 2016 | Washington DC Maternity and Baby Photographer

1. My studio... well, it's kind of amazing.

I am in love with my new studio. It's my happy place. It's pretty and gets gorgeous light. It has everything needed to make beautiful sessions. The space is inspiring and I'm constantly finding new ways to use every nook and cranny.  It's the perfect place for every session, whether I'm photographing a little newborn baby or a family of five, it's the perfect backdrop for my clients' families.

2. Fine art prints & albums are my favorite... ever.

I go all out when researching the best possible products to offer my clients, and when I found an opportunity to offer the very best museum quality fine art prints and albums I literally jumped up and down I was so giddy about them. The prints are amazing and gorgeous. Thick beautiful museum quality textured prints that render color beautifully and will last for decades. And the albums are to die for with beautiful thick heavy-weight pages and solid binding.

3. The studio wardrobe is gorgeous.

I started investing in the studio wardrobe last year and I am so in love with it. Every single piece is gorgeous, fits moms beautifully, and photographs like a dream. It's so hard to figure out what to wear for a session, and I'm so happy to be able to take the guesswork out of it for you. Having something beautiful to wear is another way I enjoy pampering clients and it's so much fun to play dress up before we begin.

4. Less is more.

This is true in several areas of my business for 2016. My style is returning to one of simple muted neutral colors, without a lot of fuss or props. This style isn't for everyone, but it makes my heart sing. I'm also trimming back on the number of sessions I take each month. I love you all and I would love to photograph every baby in the world, but it just isn't possible. This year I'm striving for balance.  More chances to connect with my husband and son, because I never want to miss out on time with them. Inspired by that, I'm also exploring new ways of giving other moms the same, with beautiful simple portraits with their children and babies.

It's going to be a wonderful year. I can't wait to find out what's in store next.
